10 Historical York Venues

There’s something so romantic about a venue draped in history and York, as you can imagine, is full of them. We looked at 10 of our absolute favourite listed buildings that host weddings in the city famous for its history and heritage…

 

1. De Grey Rooms, St Leonard’s Place

This beautiful venue was built in 1841 and is Grade II listed. It was home to the famous York Hussars regiment and has plenty of historic features like a sprung dancefloor, 11 meter high glazed ceiling in the ballroom, glass chandeliers and fine detailing throughout. It had an elegant refurbishment in 2018 so it’s rich in heritage without looking outdated. You also have an amazing view of York Minster.

2. Aldwark Manor Hotel, Alne

If you’re looking for a historic venue to offer a traditional wedding, this is a perfect choice. Aldwark Manor is dedicated to one wedding a day, has 120 acres of immaculate parkland, licensed for weddings with over 100 guests and has 53 bedrooms for guests to use afterwards. There are even spa facilities for some R&R after all the wedding stress!

3. The National Centre for Early Music

Another unique wedding venue in York, the National Centre for Early Music is a Grade I listed medieval building set within private and peaceful gardens. You will have exclusive use of the venue, allowing you to take full advantage of photo opportunities like in front of the 12th century Norman arch.

4. Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, Fossgate

For its quirkiness and historical charm, this 650 year old monument deserved a place on our list. You can hire it exclusively for 20 to 180 guests, dining in either the Hall or the Governor’s Parlour. Make use of the secluded walled garden and just embrace the ancient atmosphere and mystery of this fantastic venue.

5. York Pavilion Hotel, Fulford

Originally a 17th century farmhouse, the elegant Georgian home has been transformed into a fantastic entertainment centre and wedding venue. It’s a classic yet contemporary venue just bursting with character.

6. Escrick Park Estate, Escrick

This venue is still in York but you wouldn’t believe it for how rural it is. There are many different venues on this estate; tie the knot and celebrate in a marquee reception in the parkland, have a civil ceremony in the modern estate office or you can even marry in the beautiful walled gardens of ancient Skipwith Hall.

7. The Parsonage Country House Hotel

This beautiful hotel was built in the early 1840s and retains a lot of its period charm. It’s surrounded by beautiful gardens and woodland, and so much is included in the standard packages including discounts to their on-site spa and exclusive use of the venue.

8. The Hawkhills, Easingwold

Yes, we are technically still in York! The Hawkhills transports you to an idyllic countryside retreat of 240 acres of stunning surroundings, and an 18th century mansion that blends character from the Georgian and Victorian times. You can get married outside at this venue and there are 102 guest rooms to make the most of.

9. Aldby Park, Buttercrambe

Ok, so this one is just a little out of the city but we couldn’t leave it out! Aldby Park is a Georgian listed family home built in 1726. It’s the perfect backdrop for marquee weddings with so many different areas in the gardens to host your perfect day.

10. The Engine Shed, York Road

And we’ll finish on a fun venue just outside the city. The Engine Shed is a family run business with bespoke wedding packages. Full catering is provided and it’s just a great venue for couples looking for something different and a little quirky.
