Skincare for mature brides
There’s something magical about getting married later in life. Meeting `the one` (if there is such a thing) can happen at any time, and it’s all the more romantic if you’ve found your Mr or Mrs after waiting so long. All eyes will be on you once the big day arrives and you’ll want to look and feel your very best.
The skin begins to change once you reach your mid-twenties, so extra care is needed when using skincare products and treatments in the run up to your wedding. Take a look at our mature skin care tips for sassy skin over 40.
It’s vital to stay hydrated at any age, but skin needs watering a little more if you want it to look nice and supple. The key to looking great on the outside is looking after your inside- so prioritise your H20! Drinking lots of water is only one way to hydrate; try eating foods that are high in electrolytes such as vegetable soup, a fresh fruit salad or crudités with dip. Limiting your salt intake, kicking the caffeine and drinking less booze will also help your body to stay hydrated.
Before you think about your gorgeous bridal makeup, you’ll want a fresh canvas to work with. Eradicate dry skin before the big day with a gentle facial peel such as the Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel (it smells like fruit salad chews, what’s not to love!). To use:
- Apply to cleansed skin
- Leave for 15-20 minutes
- Wash off with warm water
The skin becomes more delicate as you get older, so it’s important to use specially formulated peels with no abrasive beads or pearls. Although this one smells like a treat, you should avoid fragranced peels if they do not agree with your skin. If you are looking for a treatment with less maintenance, there are some great chemical face peels available at clinics up and down the country. Chemical peels are a way of removing dead skin cells from the skin’s surface to allow new, healthy cells to grow back. After a Glycolic peel or TCA facial peel, you’ll find your skin feeling smoother, fresher and ready to rock that wedding day foundation! It is always recommended to contact a specialist if you need help planning your facial peels before your special day, as it may be advisable to have them a few weeks before.
Cleansing for three minutes, twice per day can keep your skin looking young and fresh. Along with removing excess oil, dirt and residue from makeup- cleansing can minimise your pores, allowing better application of foundation and concealers. Several brands offer great cleansers for older skin, including Liz Earle, Clinique, Biore, and Neutrogena. If you are looking for a long-term solution, you could consider a non-surgical treatment such as microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a form of exfoliation that polishes the top most layer of your skin and then ‘vacuums’ away the dead skin cells. The treatment designed to even out skin tone, prevent white and black heads, and reduce the size of clogged pores. It can also minimise fine lines and wrinkles, and improve the appearance of acne scarring.
Toning is an essential part of your beauty routine, and especially so in the lead-up to your big day. In our opinion, toners are underplayed. With the ability to shrink pores, balance the pH of your skin and mop up all the dirt left over from your cleanser, toners really are the glace cherry of a skincare routine. Many women over 40 experience a tightness of the skin after cleansing, and if that’s you, you’ve got another reason to throw a bottle of toner into your basket! They come in several shapes and sizes, but we love a good spray such as the AVEDA Botanical Kinetics™ Toning Mist, which helps to replenish skin on the go. You can even use this stuff on the morning of your wedding, to combat any sweating or excess oil as the result of wearing different makeup. If you are looking for a treatment to help improve the tone and texture of your skin, Microneedling (the m.pen) might be for you. Microneedling involves the creation of micro-channels in the skin using small needles, which is followed by the application of a topical skin solution, tailored to meet your specific skin care needs. We’d advise that you always speak to specialist practitioner before having Microneedling or any other non-surgical treatment.
Each year, we provide thousands of women and men with free consultations for non-surgical treatments and cosmetic surgery procedures. Call one of our specialist practitioners to arrange yours on 0330 053 9115 or start your journey here.
